The chorus to So Long, Farewell, Goodbye came to me while watching TV one night. We'd paused the show for some reason, and while I waited, the chorus showed up in my head pretty much complete. I might've changed one or two words as I wrote the verses, but it is basically the same as when they came to me. The verses were similarly easy to write, as the chorus pretty much set up the topic for me. In production, I kept it pretty simple with driving drums and bass, lots of accents, and simple guitars. It's reminiscent of arena rock but with a retro twist. So Long, Farewell, Goodbye is available NOW to Patreons and will be released on the digitial album version of Don't Light The Dynamite, coming this spring with fresh remixes of all 12 tracks!

...anyway was written on one of the worst days of my whole life. I know I have mentioned how songwriting is the only therapy I can afford, and this is that cathartic practice at its finest. The last three years has seen the loss of dozens of people who were important to me: some died, some just left, and some tried to stab me on the way out. This song is so full of such raw emotion that I wanted to produce it in a similar fashion: very stripped down and intimate, so it's got layered acoustic guitars and bass paired with some hand drums. Kept it simple with the vocals, too, just using one lead vocal track and two harmonies.
I wrote A Little Magic as an anniversary gift for my Tommy Lee, and it quickly became one of my favorite songs and got added to the band's set list right away. We recorded it in 2019 to release with the Needles & Gasoline album, but because it contained a couple of uncleared samples, I never released it except to very close friends, family, and fans. I have always wanted the rest of the world to hear it because it is such a great song with a fabulous hook, and now I can finally release it! I performed every part on this recording - so no samples at all - and it's got lush strings, a killer hook, and such a vibe!

Imaginary Friends is a song I wrote based on a writing prompt I saw on TikTok video, where the creator flipped over a card that just said "Imaginary friends" on it, and my brain IMMEDIATELY supplied the lyric, "Imaginary friends are all have" to me and I was off to the races. I wrote the song in a few hours back in August of this year and it is the first song to be released with the production on my new computer and using recording plugins for the FIRST TIME! Up until now, all the effects I had were whatever came with my DAW and finally being able to download and install plugins (long story as to why I couldn't before now) has been a total GAME CHANGER. I produced this song with a nod to 1930s "murder ballads" in mind, so it is entirely acoustic instruments and three part harmonies focusing on sevenths, all of which I performed! As with all the other songs I've released this year, I performed all the parts and did all the production and engineering myself here at Prickly Dick Studio.
Breathless is another song that I wrote for my Tommy Lee for Christmas last year, and it was one of those that wasn't super hard to write, though I had the line about "ain't no better time; bet me/than a long drive in shortbox Chevy" for months prior to writing it. Tommy Lee recently finished restoring a 1970 Chevy C-10 pickup and that line came to me while we were out driving it one day. As with all my other singles this year, I performed all the instruments on this track, engineered and produced it at Prickly Dick Studio, and mixed and mastered it myself. My hard drive took a crap right before I finished this song and I lost all my pictures I was planning on using for upcoming releases, so the cover is a little last minute, but I think it works, despite the fact that it is a Ford on the cover instead of a Chevy, but... well, anyway.
I finished producing this version of Rumors 15 years to the day from the day that I wrote it (Oct. 1, 2007 is the date of creation & Oct. 1 2022 is the date I uploaded it to my Patreons for preview), and it is super fitting for a track that just showed up one day out of nowhere, fully formed, while I was driving home on an 8-mile trip. I rushed home that night to write it down, and it's had a bumpy ride to get here since then: it was among 5 songs that I paid a Spokane studio & producer to produce for me (that I ended up having to sue them over (I won). It was recorded under the previous band name but was released the day of my divorce, so it's never gotten the attention it deserves... until now.

Fever is another song that I wrote for my Tommy Lee for his birthday last year, and it took a LOT of time to write... not because it was hard, but because I was distracted and lazy...LOL! I based the production of this song off of Belinda Carlisle's "Fool For Love" from her Heaven On Earth album, but still bringing that rockabilly vibe. I played every instrument on this track and mixing the guitars seemed to take weeks, but I am super happy with how it turned out! The cover image was another challenge that I talked about in my patreon blog.
Smokeshow is a hard-driving rock tune, featuring Molly Starlite playing every instrument and singing every part, as well as doing all the engineering, producing, mixing, mastering, and marketing completely solo! This track gave me FITS to write; I'm not joking... I spent MONTHS on the music & lyrics, recording it three times, re-writing it each time... I was starting to think that I would never get it finished, but it turned out SO GOOD! SOOOO worth all the work!
I woke up one morning in February of this year with the line, "Tried to hold my tongue but this is goin' down" in my head and ended up writing the rest of "Gaslight" by the end of the day. The song is about people who gaslight others and coming to the realization that that's what's happening and confronting them with it, letting other people know it happened. With a Western feel, "Gaslight" is a midtempo tune with a lot of dynamic qualities in the recording (whistling is HARD, y'all!), and I hope you love it as much as I do! I played all the instruments on this one and did all the engineering, mixing, and mastering, too. Check it out!
This song's journey to this final form has been a long and winding one that has taken it through 15 drummers, a lawsuit, four studios, and, finally, where it belongs, as the party rockabilly anthem it was always meant to be! "Relax" is a hard-driving tune with thumping bass, chunky guitars, and hard-hitting drums with a wink and a nod at spending a night in the bars or clubs with your friends! Check it out on all the streaming platforms below or download it today from Patreon for just $1/month!
Dynamite is the June 2022 single by Molly Starlite & the Sputniks! This track features Molly Starlite playing every instrument (except the guitar solo... thanks Jonny!) and singing every part, as well as doing all the engineering, producing, mixing, mastering, and marketing completely solo! This song just showed up one day pretty much ready to roll, starting with the opening lines and building from there! The song is about people who take advantage of you and warn you not to try to even things up... "don't light the dynamite," they say as they keep doing whatever it is they're doing. Curse of the Tiki is the EP we made with the songs from our 2-hour, scripted concert, Curse of the Tiki, which we performed live at the Panida Little Theater in Sandpoint, Idaho on Friday the 13th of September 2019. The show features these four original songs that tell the tale of a honeymooning couple in 1962 who accidentally unleash The Curse of the Tiki. These songs are performed alongside our other original material as if Molly Starlite & the Sputniks are the house band at a swank, Hawaiian resort. The main four songs that tell the story have animated videos that are projected behind the band while we play. Click album cover to see track list, lyrics, credits, and more!
